If you're using Transfers Next Day DTF transfers, start by checking that you're using the correct application settings:
- Cotton and polycotton: 157°C
- Polyester and synthetic fabrics: 130°C
- Press time: 10–15 seconds
- Pressure: Medium to firm
- Peel: Hot peel — remove the carrier immediately after pressing

1. Not Enough Pressure
Insufficient pressure is one of the first things to check when a DTF transfer isn't sticking.
A DTF transfer needs good contact with the garment during pressing.
If the pressure is too light, the adhesive may not bond properly with the fabric.
For our transfers, use medium to firm pressure.
If you're seeing some parts of the design transfer successfully while other areas lift, inconsistent pressure should be high on your troubleshooting list.
2. Uneven Pressure Across the Design
Your heat press may have sufficient pressure overall while still applying it unevenly to the design.
This commonly happens when the garment contains raised areas such as:
- Seams
- Collars
- Pockets
- Zips
- Buttons
- Drawstrings
- Thick fabric joins
Why do seams cause DTF transfers to lift?
A raised seam can prevent the heat press platen from making even contact with the area surrounding it.
That means one section of your transfer may receive plenty of pressure while another receives very little.
Whenever possible, position the garment so raised areas sit away from the pressing area.
3. Your Heat Press Temperature Is Wrong
Temperature plays an important role in activating the adhesive on a DTF transfer.
For Transfers Next Day transfers, use:
157°C for cotton and polycotton.
130°C for polyester and synthetic fabrics.
Does hotter make a DTF transfer stick better?
No — don't automatically increase the temperature.
If a transfer isn't adhering, it's tempting to keep making the press hotter.
But excessive heat can create other problems and may damage heat-sensitive garments.
First check your temperature, pressure, pressing time and pressing surface systematically.
4. You Haven't Pressed for Long Enough
Our recommended pressing time is 10–15 seconds.
If you open the press too early, the adhesive may not have received enough heat and pressure to bond correctly.
Your individual heat press can also influence results, which is why small adjustments may occasionally be required.
5. Your Heat Press May Not Be Reaching the Temperature It Displays
If you're using the correct settings but repeatedly experiencing adhesion problems, consider whether your heat press is actually reaching the temperature shown on its display.
Heat presses can vary, particularly as equipment ages.
Why does my transfer stick in some areas but not others?
If the problem repeatedly occurs in the same area of the platen, uneven heat or pressure may be worth investigating.
Don't immediately change your entire application process based on one failed garment. Look for a repeatable pattern.
6. The Garment Isn't Flat
A flat pressing surface is essential.
Before positioning your transfer, make sure the print area is:
- Flat
- Smooth
- Free from wrinkles
- Away from raised seams where possible
This becomes particularly important when applying DTF transfers to hoodies, workwear and zipped garments.
7. Moisture in the Garment
Garments can contain moisture even when they don't feel wet.
This can sometimes affect the heat-transfer process.
Should you pre-press before applying DTF?
A short pre-press can help flatten the garment and remove some moisture before you position your transfer.
It also gives you a smooth surface to work with.
8. You're Peeling the Transfer Incorrectly
Different DTF films can use different peeling processes.
Transfers Next Day DTF transfers are hot peel.
That means you should peel the carrier immediately after pressing in one smooth, quick motion.
What should I do if the DTF transfer lifts while peeling?
Stop peeling.
If you can see the artwork coming away with the carrier film, don't continue pulling the entire transfer off the garment.
Check that you've used the correct:
- Temperature
- Pressing time
- Pressure
- Peel method
Also check whether a seam or another raised area prevented part of the design from receiving sufficient pressure.
9. You're Using the Wrong Temperature for the Fabric
Not every garment should be pressed at the same temperature.
Our recommended settings are:
- 157°C: cotton and polycotton
- 130°C: polyester and synthetic fabrics
This is particularly important with synthetic garments, which can react differently to heat.
Always check the garment manufacturer's care information before heat pressing an unfamiliar product.
10. Your Heat Press Pressure Isn't Consistent
If you're producing multiple garments and getting different results despite using identical temperature and time settings, check your pressure.
You want medium to firm pressure applied evenly across the complete design.
Garment thickness can also change how the press behaves.
For example, moving from a lightweight T-shirt to a thick hoodie can alter how the garment sits inside the press.
Why Is Only Part of My DTF Transfer Sticking?
Partial adhesion often points towards uneven pressure or an uneven pressing surface.
For example, if the left-hand side of your design transfers perfectly but the right-hand side lifts, investigate what was underneath that area of the garment.
Check for:
- A seam
- A pocket
- A fold in the garment
- Uneven heat press pressure
- Uneven platen temperature
The pattern of the failure can often help you identify the cause.
Why Are the Edges of My DTF Transfer Lifting?
Check whether the entire design received even pressure.
Edge lifting can occur when part of the transfer hasn't bonded correctly.
Check your application settings and make sure nothing underneath the garment prevented the edge of the transfer from receiving adequate pressure.
Why Is My DTF Transfer Peeling After Washing?
If the transfer looks fine immediately after pressing but begins peeling after washing, the original application may not have created a complete bond.
Possible causes include:
- Insufficient pressure
- Incorrect pressing temperature
- Insufficient pressing time
- Uneven application
- Incorrect garment care
